SORRY, I'M TOO BUSY WASHING MY HAIR..

Incoming Calendar Event: Hair Wash Day

The day us girls with longer hair or those who wear semi-permanent Hair Extensions dread. Why? It's a mundane task that takes longer than anticipated, one that takes even longer to dry (and gives us really bad arm ache at the same time).

While hair washing should be a simple and straightforward task - rinse, shampoo, rinse, conditioner, rinse, dry - it's often time consuming and there are some common mistakes you may be making in your hair wash routine that can result in hair becoming either overly greasy and weighed down, or limp and lifeless.

Today we'll be covering the do's and dont's of hair washing, to ultimately establish a correct haircare routine that provides lustrous and glossy results to your locks every time - minus the hair drama.

YOU'RE USING THE INCORRECT FORMULAS

Finding a Shampoo and Conditioner formula which is specified to your exact hair type is vital in any haircare routine. With a wide range of formulations available in the hair industry, it can be tricky to pinpoint one individual product. However, once you've found a dreamy formula you love (and your hair loves, too) stick with it and don't be tempted to stray away with competitor brands or the newest hype product on the market which claims to be 'magic in a bottle' (because lets face it, it simply doesn't exist).

Opting for Shampoos and Conditioners which are specifically formulated for use with your individual hair concern; such as repairing damaged hair, protecting colour treated hair, hydrating dry hair, clarifying oily hair etc - will be much more beneficial than using a standard formula to do the job.

Dry Hair - opt for moisturising/hydrating formulas
Oily Hair - opt for clarifying/cleansing formulas
Damaged, Dry Hair - opt for conditioning/nourishing formulas
Ashy Blonde Hair - opt for purple/toning formulas

YOU'RE NOT LATHERING THE PRODUCT

Granted, this is a tip we only just learned recently ourselves (oops). When applying any Shampoo into the palm of your hand (around the size of a 5 pence coin for fine/short hair, and the size of a 2 pence coin for anything longer/thicker) - lathering the product is key!

Massaging the Shampoo between your palms so that it emulsifies before applying it onto your damp hair will allow the product to go a lot further. Creating a rich and creamy lather aids the cleansing agents in Shampoos to spread easily across the scalp, and down the mid-lengths and ends of hair, guaranteeing a thorough and clarifying cleanse.

YOU'RE NOT DOUBLE CLEANSING

Avid user of styling products and mousses to perfect your look? Us too!

Regular use of hairstyling products, sprays and styling mousses can create an inevitable product build-up to accumulate on your hair and scalp. And, while it can be a pain to remove, the key to thoroughly cleansing any residue and product build-up is by double cleansing.

Similar to how you'd double cleanse when removing your make-up at the end of a long day, the same principle applies with hair washing. Double Cleansing is the process of shampooing your hair twice - firstly to remove any surface dirt, oils and product build-up, and the second cleanse to diminish any residue left over. Trust us on this one, your hair will thank you for it and you'll never go back to one shampoo, once you try!

YOU'RE APPLYING TOO MUCH CONDITIONER

We've all been there, we're half way through blowdrying the mid-lengths and ends of our hair when we come across a pesky section that point blank refuses to dry. Upon further inspection, the hair feels sticky and clumpy to touch (uh oh). We haven't rinsed out our conditioner throughly.. doh! Applying a similar sized amount of conditioner (around 2p - 5p piece sized depending on hair length/thickness) and distributing this evenly throughout your hair will prevent any blowdrying hair dramas.

Another culprit of hair feeling heavy or weighed down, is from applying too much conditioner - particularly towards the scalp area. This can lead to hair becoming greasy or overly oily the day after washing. It's best to focus conditioner application towards the mid-lengths and ends of hair, where it's needed most. This is especially beneficial for colour-treated blondes or those who get regular highlights, where the ends of hair are prone to breakage and damage - which conditioner will be the rescue aid for!
