DID SOMEONE SAY JELLY LIPGLOSS?

Now, I don’t know about you, but our Saturday mornings in the late nineties were mostly spent sat in front of the television waiting for Ant & Dec to make their weekend appearance on SM:TV Live, eagerly awaiting what would happen next in 'Chums— the must-see and child friendly skit of the iconic US sitcom 'Friends'.

We were surrounded by (a very messy) Barbie Dreamhouse and VW Beetle, a plethora of much-loved Polly Pocket play sets, a neglected Tamagotchi (that had probably died ten times over) and those Sky Dancer dolls that’d catapult through the air like a missile — you were lucky to avoid them.

But away from the weekend childhood reminiscence, today we’re taking you on a journey of ‘90s nostalgia and exploring those oh-so fashionable hair and beauty accessories we all used to love (or loathe) during our early years, and practically couldn't live without.

BUTTERFLY HAIRCLIPS

If you were a 90's kid, chances are you had a cluster of butterfly hairclips in various colours and designs. These cutesy accessories were a staple in every girls collection. Made of plastic or metal and featuring two wings that could be opened and closed to hold a section of hair in place, they elevated any standard hairstyle to one with so much sass.

But why were they so popular? Well, besides being super cute, butterfly hairclips allowed you to add a touch of whimsical freedom to your hairstyle. They were the perfect way to flaunt your personality and add a pop of bright colour to your everyday look. The hardest decision was how many in your hair you'd wear. Keep it subtle with a few, or go all out? Whatever you chose, you can bet that they made you the most popular kid at the School Disco.

JELLY MAKE-UP

Imagine those childhood jelly shoes we all wore 24/7, but transformed into makeup. That's exactly what jelly makeup was all about, a unique texture that added a playful element to our beauty routines. Lip glosses infused with glitter and sparkle were our go-to, whether it was a clear or Barbie pink formula. You can guarantee that they'd only last around 5 minutes before the gloss somewhat disappeared, but it was the closest we'd get to feeling like a fully-fledged make-up artist.

COMB HAIRBANDS

The comb hairband was a staple in every 90's kid's wardrobe. It was the go-to accessory for School Disco's, sleepovers, and even casual outings. With its unique design and versatility, it quickly became a symbol of the '90s fashion era.

STICK-ON EARRINGS

Because we didn't want to commit to a piercing (and were probably too young for one, anyway). A pair of stickers for every day of the week, when in reality they didn't last more than a few minutes.

THE CRAZY BRAIDER

Hands up if you were victimised by the Crazy Braider? We can FEEL the pain from just looking at this photo. The method of intertwining your hair between three plastic prongs to create those mini braids we always saw and desired when abroad on Holiday.

Did it work? Never. Hair would usually end up in a tangled mess, or even worse, still stuck to the device itself. If you didn't have a hair-mergency with one of these contraptions at least once, did you really have a childhood?!

CRAZY HAIR WRAP

The Summer holidays arrived and all we wanted was for strands of our hair to be wrapped in the pink and magenta coloured thread, and secured with a trendy metallic bead - to show everyone who was the most stylish kid on the block. We didn't lose too much of our hair from this one, but the end results didn't go to plan as such.

BALL BOBBLES

At first glance, knocker bead hair bobbles may look harmless, but they were crippingly painful! These little devils had a knack for getting tangled in our hair (and lets not even talk about if one of the balls snapped against your head). Although super stylish at the time, the whole mantra of 'beauty is pain' was real with this one.

METALLIC NAILPOLISH

Metallic silver, metallic gold, metallic pink.. trust us, we had it all. If a nail polish was stamped with a Barbie or Hello Kitty logo on the front, we immediately wanted it.

FLAVOURED LIP BALM

Whether it was Candyfloss, Bubblegum or the classic Coca Cola flavour - these lip balms were guaranteed to make you the most popular kid on the playground. Was it really necessary to have 12 lip balms? Nah. Did we continue to collect them? Absolutely.

BARBIE HAIR BRUSHES

More painful than stepping on lego (trust us). If your Barbie doll didn't have the full collection of multi-coloured hairbrushes, what were you doing?

DIY ROSE PETAL PERFUME

Last but certainly not least, is the DIY Rose Petal Perfume. If you ever spent weekends as a kid selling your unwanted toys and teddies on the top of your garden wall to passing neighbours — you most likely made your own rose petal perfume — and it was the best thing ever at the time.

By straining some rose petals (or any flower, really) in with water and bottling and labelling them up, we thought we'd designed some magnificent creation that would fly off shelves if it was ever brought into a store. When in reality, the scent of rose wasn't really existent at all. We tried!
